Laila Abbas is a Palestinian filmmaker, producer, and academic known for her sharp, socially engaged storytelling. She gained attention in 2013 with Ice & Dust, a documentary about a young Palestinian woman’s journey to Canada in search of a better life.
Her work explores gender and social norms within Palestinian society. In 2019, she was selected for Berlinale Talents at the Berlin Film Festival, and her debut feature, Thank You for Banking With Us!, marks her bold entry into fiction filmmaking.
Abbas began her career in television before earning a film degree from SAE Institute in Jordan and later studying cinema and TV production at Royal Holloway, University of London. She has also taught cinema at Palestinian universities and served as head programmer for Palestine Cinema Days.
