Maryam Touzani was born in Tangier. After co-writing Razzia with Nabil Ayouch — in which she also starred — she directed her debut feature Adam, selected at Cannes (Un Certain Regard) and Morocco's official Oscar submission.
In 2022, her second feature The Blue Caftan was selected at Cannes and became the first Moroccan film ever shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. It won over 60 awards worldwide and set a box office record for a Moroccan film internationally. Both Adam and The Blue Caftan were screened by ANA.
In 2023, she served on the Official Competition jury at Cannes.
Calle Malaga, her third feature, marks her Spanish-language debut. Shot in Tangier — the city where she grew up alongside the last generation of the Spanish community — it stars Carmen Maura in the lead role.
